Sward
Sward is the turf, playability and pitch-inspection record of a sports ground's grounds department — the people who own the living surface and must be able to prove it was fit to play on.
About this template
Overview
Sward is the turf, playability and pitch-inspection record of a sports ground's grounds department — the people who own the living surface and must be able to prove it was fit to play on. Thornleigh Park keeps thirty-four hectares of managed turf: one stadium bowl, nine training squares and two stitched hybrids, serving sixty-one fixtures a season, measured weekly by hammer, disc, probe and eye.
This is not a facilities booking tool and not a generic maintenance tracker. It is the department's own record, drawn in the idiom of a Victorian botanical chromolithograph seed-catalogue plate crossed with a mid-century agricultural field-trial report — a deep sward-green shell carrying ivory specimen plates with hairline keylines and plate numbers, engraved grass-species line illustrations, ruled trial tables with decimal-aligned numerals, and drop caps opening each section. One madder red is held strictly for the FAIL verdict, one ochre strictly for MONITOR.
What it holds
- Pitch register — each surface by reference, construction type (natural, hybrid-stitched, sand-carpet), area, rootzone depth, drainage design rate in mm/hr and year of last reconstruction.
- Playability testing — Clegg impact hardness in gravities, surface traction in Newton-metres, ball rebound and ball roll, moisture as percent volumetric, each against the governing body's pass band with a PASS / MONITOR / FAIL verdict.
- Agronomy — sward composition by percent ryegrass, poa and bent, shoot density per square metre, rooting depth, soil pH, organic matter, and a nutrient programme in kg N per hectare.
- Maintenance operations — height of cut by pitch and week, verti-draining, hollow-coring, top-dressing tonnages, overseeding rates, machine and operator.
- Irrigation and moisture — zone application in mm, soil moisture probe readings, evapotranspiration balance and a water-use budget.
- Lighting rigs and growth — supplementary lighting hours per shaded zone, PAR readings, canopy temperature.
- Fixture load and wear — hours of play per pitch per month and a wear map by zone (goalmouth, centre circle, wings), with repair hours.
- Pitch inspections — the referee's and match delegate's pre-match inspections, frost and waterlogging decisions, and the reason recorded for every postponement.
- Renovation programme and spray records — close-season works by pitch with contractor and cost, operator certificates, machine service hours and the statutory pesticide application register.
- Club portal and head groundsman's dashboard — the real product behind the record: a fixture secretary sees which pitches are fit to play, the latest verdict and its reason, and books against a wear budget; the head groundsman sees pitches failing their pass band, programme progress, machine service due and irrigation against evapotranspiration.
Who it is for
Football, rugby and cricket grounds, stadium and training-ground operators, sports turf contractors, local authority grounds teams, universities and schools with managed pitches, and any organisation that must defend a surface decision with the measurements that produced it.
Make it yours
Swap the ground, the pitches and the governing body's pass bands for your own; change the test battery, the units and the renovation calendar. The plate idiom and the evidence trail survive the swap.
